Simply the worst experience imaginable for buying a custom engagement ring. Charleston Alexander, over-promised and under-performed in their ability to deliver a quality diamond ring. I would discourage anyone from having the jewelers make you a custom ring. The quality of their workmanship is simply not on par with what one should expect.
I originally worked with Samaya at Charleston Alexander to have an engagement ring made. We were very clear on the style of the ring and the dimensions (in writing). Upon their first try, the design was right-on; however the craftsmanship was simply shoddy. It was disgraceful, as it was clear from looking at the ring it was lop-sided and the prongs were not even the same size all the way around. Imagine the disapointment to spend over $6,000 to have a ring setting that is not even symetrical. The ring simply should not have left the hands of Charleston in its state, which they later admitted claiming they had one of their lower quality jewelers make it.
I took the ring back and they agreed to re-make it, after I pointed out that it was unacceptable. They did re-make it and this time I will admit the quality of the craftsmanship had improved, but the design strayed from what was originally agreed. Again, disappointing to say the least.
We now had the ring made a third time (I say we because I had to give the ring to my financee in it's imperfect design, as a result of Charleston's slow turnaround time - knowing I would be bringing it back).
This time, I wish I could say was a charm. It was not. However, it was acceptable to my naked eye (although not under the scope) and it was accceptable to my financee. Samaya continually gave the excuse of it being "custom" - is that a reason to expect poorly constructed jewelery? It should not be.
In short, Charleston has good prices - but you get what you pay for, if custom made.
