The biggest tourist traps in Boston

Created by: Chrispy

These are the spots that tourists get duped into thinking are "true" Boston. Beware! These spots aren't necessarily "awful" I just find them overrated.

  • Faneuil Hall Market Place

    1

    1 Faneuil Hall Market Pl

    Boston, MA 02109

    Tel: (617) 723-9109

    Landmarks | Shopping Centers

Do any Bostonian's actually come here to shop? I certainly wouldn't. The sheer number of chain restaurants (Houston's, Hard Rock Cafe, Bertucci's) that set up shop right here should tell you what you're getting into.

At night it gets a little more "Boston-ish" -- but I don't mean that in a good way. Faneuil Hall bars are full of overly tanned guys that want to get in fights.

It's not ALL bad though -- the food court does offer a good opportunity to feed yourself for free (samples!) and the street performers are the one unique thing about Faneuil Hall that I do appreciate.

  • Cheers

    2

    84 Beacon St

    Boston, MA 02108

    Tel: (617) 227-9605

    Traditional American

Not much really needs to be said about Cheers. The Hampshire House location is at least historically interesting. The Fan Hall location bleeds tourist trap.

  • Mike's Pastry

    3

    300 Hanover St

    Boston, MA 02113

    Tel: (617) 742-3050

    Desserts | Bakery

Boston's "Little Italy", the North End.

Lines, lines, lines. The pastries aren't bad, they just aren't that great. Go across the street to Modern Pasty to see what a true Italian bakery is like.

  • Top of the Hub

    4

    800 Boylston Street

    Boston, MA 02199

    Tel: (617) 536-1775

    Traditional American | Romantic Restaurant

Top of the Hub sources hard-to-find wines

Don't get me wrong, I like the view from Top of the Hub -- but is the cuisine anything that you couldn't get at Chili's? Also -- depending on where your seat is you may or may not get a view. Big risk.

Another obnoxious thing is that at the same time people will treat it as a family restaurant (kids running around) while others treat it as a romantic spot where they want quiet and ambiance -- it's hard (impossible) to have it both ways.

  • Old North Church

    5

    193 Salem St

    Boston, MA 02113

    Tel: (617) 523-6676

    Landmarks

    It's not that cool.
