South Station

Just behind the original granite facade, a masterpiece of Boston architect H.H. Richardson, of Trinity Church fame, lies a bright, airy "Great Room." A crossroad of contemporary urban life, the Great Room bustles with commuters, lunchtime patrons and visitors, yet always echoes with days-gone-by and speaks of promises yet to come. In the majestic room, you can sense what it was like when train travel was at its height. The elegance and grandeur of the original terminal, from which the first trains left in 1899, remains - as does the magic each train carries into South Station filled with the promise of new adventures. South Station proudly plays its role as Boston's gateway - now, a place to grab a bite to eat, accomplish chores, shop for something special, to hold a business meeting or to just to sit and watch the world go by. As Boston’s gateway, the Great Room holds many surprises. It regularly plays hosts to exhibits ranging from celebrations of Boston’s leading figures to New England’s rich history. It serves as a concert hall featuring local musicians and nationally known talent. It provides an opportunity to interact with the programs that make our community so dynamic, from dedicated public services to non-profit organizations. It entertains Boston’s Financial District and New England families with special events ranging from ballroom dances to the annual Holiday Train Exhibit. Commuters, business people and visitors, as they have for the past century, can all find something at South Station: Boston's Great Room.
