this is my business

The Somerville Theatre is located in Davis Square Somerville. In addition to the recently renovated original auditorium (a 900 seat ornate picture palace with balcony, stage, and huge screen) the Somerville also has 4 smaller cinemas, all designed with style. The film programming is a mix of first-run movies (at $7.00 on evenings and weekends, it is the cheapest place in Boston to see a new movie, even if all the folks paying $9.25 in Harvard Square haven't figured it out yet), plus some second-run, art-house, and specialty schedules. Home of the Independent Film Festival of Boston, the 24-hour Boston Sci-Fi Marathon, and of course numerous live events. The projection staff are trained professionals, all members of the local projectionists union, so film presentations are generally superior to any of the movie houses downtown. The concession stand features freshly popped corn and is served with real butter. They also sell many kinds of candy, tea, and coffee. Starting in April, the Somerville Theatre will be the only movie theater in the Boston area that sells beer and wine - soon you will be able to take a beer with you to the movies! The staff is friendly, but not in a fake corporate way - and unlike some indie theaters, there is no pretense about the place - it still has that 'Somerville' feel to it. Many of the staff have been there for a while - not a lot of changeover, which is a good thing here.

The #1 movie theater in Boston for my money. The tickets have remained cheaper than the competition, the staff has always been nothing short of friendly, they consistently bring great movies, the popcorn is delicious, the place is clean, and they serve beer!!! Can't ask for much more.

This old, beautifully restored historic theater has so much charm and ambiance that attending one of the many varied shows it offers is enhanced by the surroundings.

Not only is its history fascinating, the recent renovations to the main hall and lobby have truly made this theatre the gem of Somerville. Who can beat the prices and selection of films and performances? Hollywood even turns out for the annual Indep. Film Festival, and North and South Shore residents come out for shows there to get a classic experience not found in today's movie megaplexes.
