Redbones is definitely one of my favorite spots in the Boston area. Couple a menu packed with meaty deliciousness with a world-class beer menu and you've probably got a good thing going. The details:

Food: The food at Redbones is good, it's just not great. Mainly, I don't love the BBQ as much as I do other places (Blue Ribbon). Don't get me wrong, it's still good, just not the best out there. The Jamaican Jerk Beef sandwich is so spicy you might cry. I also like the catfingers and buffalo shrimp as apps.

Beer: Next to The Public House, I think Redbones has the best selection in the Boston area (yes I said it Sunset). PBR and Guinness are always on tap, but the other 18 rotate constantly (sometimes midweek). They have a big selection of Pacific NW brews; always good stuff. Bartenders are great downstairs too. ***** Stars

Atmosphere: I prefer to sit downstairs. I like the funky decor and low ceilings. The bartenders are always good and the people just seem to be more chilled out instead of looking to gorge themselves on five pounds of ribs. I also love the music they have down there (always seems to be a mix of Modest Mouse, Radiohead and some other stuff I like). ***** Stars

Intangibles: The location is right in Davis Square easy to get to by public transport or driving (parking available if you know where to look). They also deliver (deliver BBQ?!?!) on these ridiculous bikes; points for trying (i've never done it). **** Stars

Real slow-smoked barbecue, and none of that vinegary NC style sauce produced on Jen-Aire that yankees might confuse with barbecue. Just enough of the fat rendered out, good cole slaw, Great beers and where else can you get barleywine?!!! (Great with pulled pork!) A great spot, but sometimes too loud for my 6 year old. Pecan pie is a must. BTW I am from Tennessee and was an occasional regional truck driver down south, I might know from barbecue.

Best Texas ribs I've ever tried. Best restaurant barbecue I've ever had. And I'm from the South, so I should know! (Their sides are great, too.)

Redbones is all about the atmosphere, which includes the delicious aroma of roasting meat, spicy marinades and BBQ sauces, beer, and "Southern edginess" that greet you at the door! Cozy, comforting, and hip at the same time.

Redbones is the best for four reasons: (1) Ribs are cooked and served without the BBQ sauce applied. Ribs shouldn't be cooked with sauce. (2) Ribs are slow-cooked, just the way they should be. (3) Ribs are succulent. (4) The waitstaff is terrific - attentive without being cutesy.

Redbones has been doing BBQ right for 20 years. They brought BBQ to Boston long before it was popular - and it's still just as good today as it was then.

Hushpuppies. They're still not as good as mom's, but not every BBQ place around Boston has them, which is a crime!

Redbones is a funky place, very out of the ordinary. Its food and beer selection is far above the median, and its wait staff are always very friendly and courteous, making for a very comfortable and laid back atmosphere. It is small enough to be intimate and not that large to feel intimidated. Redbones is a state of mind too.

I have been to the restaurant and at functions that were catered by Redbones and the food was excellent, service-at the function and in the restaurant-was fantastic. And above all the prices for the quality and quantity are unbeatable.
