The San Jose is located on South Congress Avenue, a few blocks South of where the Colorado River runs through Downtown Austin. Built in 1936 as an "ultramodern motor court," over the years it saw various incarnations as a brothel, a Bible school, and haven for prostitutes, transients and addicts. Liz Lambert bought the hotel in 1995, and ran it in its latter incarnation for 3 years before shutting in down. With the help of Bob Harris of Lake/Flato architects, she reopened a couple years later-- in its current incarnation-- a beautiful, urban bungalow syle hotel with soul.
