A professional non-profit theater, Signature is dedicated to producing contemporary plays and musicals and to the development of new work, creating award-winning productions in its intimate theater space. Known for its bold aesthetic, Signature is entering its 17th season under Artistic Director Eric Schaeffer and is be moving into a new two-theater complex opening in January 2007 in Shirlington Village. Signature has been nominated for 209 Helen Hayes Awards for excellence in the professional theater and has been honored with 50 Helen Hayes Awards, including Outstanding Musical in 1992, 1993, 1995, 1997, 2000, 2005, 2006 and Outstanding Play in 1999. Signature's recent sold-out hit production of "Urinetown" won an unprecedented eight Helen Hayes Awards in 2006.

The most creative and talented group of theatre professionals in DC area theatre today. Eric's interests and talent showcase productions of high quality, musical wonderment and enlightened variety. Signature offers programs for all tastes and interests, better reflecting the wide theatre interests found in the community at large.

Combination of exciting/cutting edge new plays and older plays with new interpretations. Very gifted people on stage and off, with a "family feeling" for longtime subscribers. And still a price performer.

Signature is creatively daring with outstanding productions. And the theatre is small enough that viewers and subscribers are warmly welcomed and feel intimately involved. The staff is unusually friendly to all.

They always pull off a BIG show feel, with such a small staff and space. I'm always happy with the productions from Signature, whereas other theatres are often hit or miss.

Wonderful productions; great marketing; personable staff; intimate space; lower cost and better value (including free parking) as well as more spacious and comfortable seats and better views than the Kennedy Center or other larger houses. Can't wait for the new facility.

Signature not only creates great intimate original theater, with casts that include their wonderful regular actors and talented guests, but they do so much for the community! Since the theatre opened in the early 90's, Signature has had a wonderful partnership with Wakefield High School and Arlington County Public Schools, giving free tickets, workshops, and internships to arts students, and Wakefield students an incredible opportunity to work and perform with professionals! Thank you Signature, you make Arlington "home"!

Nationally-acclaimed musicals in an intimate performance space -- who could ask for more? I am particularly impressed by Signature's willingness to take risks, to stage world-premier works, and to commission new musicals. Bravo!

Signature Theatre is the best of the best! Besides the many excelent plays they put on each year Signature plays a huge role in the community. Signature Theatre has a yearly program at nearby Wakefield Highschool that allows students interested in theatre to perform on stage with "Signature In the Schools". The students participating in the Arlington Apprentice Program, a program dedicated to tallented young artists, get to see every production at Signature for free, as well as participate in many workshops at the theatre. Signature is the perfect example of what any Theatre, large or small, should be.

An evening at Signature is always engaging, entertaining and memorable. By reinventing classical American musicals and nurturing new works by emerging composers/playwrights, Signature assures their productions are never "stale."
