Good learning atmosphere with good instructors and serious students. School is within good commuting distance from work and home...and caters to working adults.
Their philosophy is congruent with their practice in their lifestyle. It is not about violence, but about overall health. The teachers are very encouraging and supportive, and they take into consideration each student's strengths and weaknesses in re: how they treat them. You can tell that the teachers don't see their students simply as a number or $.
After attending several different martial arts schools in the area, I've decided that this one is definitely the best. The training they provide is multi-sided, you get to train your body and mind in various ways, and the more you attend class (which can be every day of the week, if you want!), the better you feel. For me, the classes worked like a magic pill against stress and depression...and I can't tell you how much stronger and healthier, both physically and mentally, I have become over the two years I've attended. And the instructors...they are wonderful people, they have become my friends and mentors, teaching me much more than just kicking and punching. This is the warmest school I have ever seen. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants some change in life, and I'm sure the other students will agree with me 100%.
The dedication to the Chinese Martial Arts is obvious. Sifu Maiky and Claire are excellent. The school is well-built and very clean.
They have the BEST instructors in the area. They really know what they're doing!
I really enjoy the method of teaching and the variety of material that we have access to learn. I feel the teachers really do care and encourage growth.
Animal forms, weapons, sparring! Need I say more? If so, then the self defense, excellent instruction, and fun workouts. This is only the start. As students develop their strength, agility, and speed...his/her understanding of self will increase. One will learn their physical and mental limitations...and teach themselves to exceed those self implemented limitations. Tai Chi complements the hard side of Kung Fu. It is a journey I will never return from because it has changed my life for the better!
Excellent facilities, great atmosphere, good location (plenty of parking), knowledgeable instructors.
The instructors create an atmosphere that brings out the best in their students. The facilities are fantastic.
When I joined DC Shaolin-Do I was also beginning an advanced degree. I was not sure that I could do both, but actually the regular Kung-Fu and Tai Chi classes helped me to focus better on my studies (in conjunction with my full time job) and soon I realized that the Master's program would not have been as stress free with out Shaolin-Do! Sifu Maiky is very dedicated and his enthusiasm is contagious! I look forward to attending my classes and truely feel as though they have made me a better person, not only physically, but mentally as well!
Visited several martial arts & tai-chi schools in the Metro Area but found Shoalin-Do to be the best choice that suites my personal goals, that offers more programs to people w/ very different physical abilities, & fits well w/ my work schedule. I'm taking Tai-Chi at Shoalin-Do. My personal goals are to improve my health & well-being, balance, flexibilty, concentration, and most importantly, to learn & practice something that I can do for a life time. I believe the school as well as the students there will help me achieve that.
The philosophy is applicable in every aspect of your life, it has a great atmosphere and an impressive tardition
Shaolin-Do has instituted a structured, yet non-intimidating, environment for learning martial arts. Their adult-focused programs cater to those individuals who have always had an interest in Kung Fu and/or Tai Chi, yet are too shy to try. This has been a great choice for me and my wife.
The teachers are not only incredibly skilled in the martial arts, but in their teaching of them. They push us hard to excel both physically and mentally. I wish I had found them earlier.
Shaolin-Do is a great workout and mentally challenging. You are constantly learning something new and you literally work every muscle in your body!
Sifu and his team are totally amazing!!!! They constantly push us to do our best but somehow manage to do so without being overbearing. We can learn as much or as little as we want but once you're around their enthusiasm (and the enthusiasm of all the GREAT students we have there) you'll want to learn more and more. The instructors motivate the students to do their best through positive reinforcement. Workouts are touch but balanced. There are many students at multiple levels so there's always someone available to go through forms with. And we won't even get started about the wonderful seminar/training opportunities . . .
I've been working out since 1991, but have never been as challenged, either physically or mentally. Since joining in November of 2005 I have found that I am calmer and better able to handle stress, as well as more focused. Shaolin Do teaches in an enviroment that allows the individual to progress at their own pace, without pressure from the instuctors. One of the most interesting things that I've noticed is how it increases both your humility and your confidence. That would seem contradictory, but it isn't. The school has also attacted a very diverse and interesting clientele. Both students and teachers are very supportive and no one is made to feel out of place. It's a great way to continue ones personal development, however it requires tremendous discipline and commitment. But it's still a blast! Check it out!
Sifu Maiky and Claire are excellent instructors. Each session is mentally and physically challenging. They provide a well-rounded martial arts experience.
1. Sifu consistently teaches many of the classes. This is especially important for the elementary material where the base is built for the more advanced material. 2. The curriculum is broad; not restricted to one or two 'family' styles. This helps to develop perspective. By surveying many different styles and aspects of training, ultimately, it is to be hoped, the student will find styles and techniques that are best suited to him. 3. The focus is on skill. Students are never far from applications. Sparring and self defense are commenced when a student first enters training. 4. Material is varied. There is repetition enough to learn, but not monotony. 4. Classes are serious but relaxed. 5. Extra help is always available from the Sifu, the instructors, or the advanced students. 6. There is room for individuality. You must know the material, but the individual is taken into account. 7. Motivation amongst the students is high as is the general morale. 8. Pricing is flexible and does not require the student to make large financial commitments or to sign long term contracts. Of course, if a larger commitment is made, such as advanced payment, there are incentives for that as well. 9. There are many extra curricular activities like advanced seminars - these are practical, not theoretic. Seminar instructors are often sifus from other schools in the system. Sometimes they bring an entourage of their students with them. For instance, since joining in April 2006, there have been two seminars, one taught by a Sifu from upstate New York and another taught by the Grand Master himself. These were offered to everyone. Even at my level, I believe that I benefited. 10. The dynamics between the advanced students on the one hand and the elementary and intermediate students on the other is the best I have ever seen. Many advanced students voluntarily attend the basic classes where they not only participate in the drills, but also in the sparring. This affords the beginning or elementary student with opportunities to see the effect of the training and to gain valuable experience through direct interaction. I am an older (55) but elementary student and I have been particularly struck by how much this has helped me. 11. From where I live in Clifton, I drive an approximately hour to get to the school. I personally know others who drive from Point of Rocks and Andrews Air Force Base - during the evening rush. I would not do this were it not worth it. 12. I'll shut up now, but I could write quite a bit more.
The individual attention you receive from the instructors. Also, the studio is a beautiful place to work out. Come join us!
Shaolin-Do Kung Fu & Tai Chi is an excellent place to train and learn martial arts. The classes are great workouts and the material is fun and challenging. Sifu Maiky’s knowledgeable and patient instruction can not be topped and the environment of the school is friendly and open. Shaolin-Do is a great place to learn self defense, balance and exercise.
My Sifu, Maiky Tran and co-owner Claire Richards, are gifted instructors that have worked very hard to successfully create a fun, friendly and safe environment for the serious study of traditional Shaolin Kung Fu and Tai Chi. They, along with my fellow students have changed my life for the better. DC Shaolin-Do is my home away from home.
I really found a very relaxed environment in Shaolin-Do Kung Fu. We learn personal defense, but we always get the feeling that we are becoming part of an ancient tradition.
I've trained at Shaolin-Do for over 3 years now and it has been one of the best experiences I've ever had. The instructors are great, really helping you to grow and expand your skills. It has become something I will practice for many years to come.
When I began training at Shaolin-Do, I was out of shape and was looking for something different. I did exceptionally well in every aspect of my life except physical fitness. Shaolin-Do changed that! Since I've been training, I am in the best shape of my life. I have a new confidence about myself. This confidence has made me a new person. I've set higher goals for myself, professionally, personally and academically. Guess what, since I've been a student, I've have surpassed every last goal and are continuously setting new ones. If I could make one suggestion to everyone who is reading this. I would say, come by and see what we are like. After meeting our instructors you will notice that they are what has contributed to the success of this school. They are dedicated and motivated individuals who not only like the art, but believe in it as well. They not only teach you how, but teach you why and that is important. So come on, give it a try....I did! (Mecca, a proud student)
