Best beer bar in New England by far. Mussel bowls are steamed to perfection and served with delicious frites. The monks cell has added more seating. Great food, great beer - zero complaints.
Let me start off by saying that this place alone was responsible for turning me (and countless others I am sure) into a beer snob. If you are looking to expand your horizons of what you think is good beer then you simply have to go here. There is nowhere in the city that has the selection of beer that they have here and the pride in knowing every detail about the beer that they carry.
The expansion of the Monk's Cell (the dark candlelit area up the ramp) was much needed. This part of the Publick House is my personal favorite I'll wait the extra time for a table back there. It's quieter and a lot more intimate. When they added this extra room it made me fall in love with this place all over again. There s just something about all those candles and the heavy wood furniture.
Ok, so now the bad news... and why I am giving it 4 and not 5 stars. This place is crowded and the wait staff (not the bartenders they remain cool) seems to be feeling the pain of their popularity recently. Most noticeably the hostesses have become less and less accommodating over the last few months. I seriously hope this trend ends soon and they get their act together and start being more helpful.
So, aside from the major problems getting tables and the annoyed at the customers attitude of a very small minority of the staff, this place is one of my favorites and I encourage you to go. But take my advice and show up early, like 6pm and you will be happy.
Great place to find beers that you'll be hard pressed to find anyplace else. In addition to a fantastic beer selection they have very good food. On my first visit the waiter inexplicably messed up my table's order. (Left onions off my burger, and all of the toppings out of the macaroni and cheese.) However, the waiter more than made up for this faux pas by giving our table complementary drinks. Service like that shouldn't be taken for granted. I'll definitely be back.
TPH has the widest selection of "vintage" and cask beers around as well as semi-hard to find items and everyday brews to boot.
Best Beer Selection in Boston. The food ain't too shabby either. Chile awesome, mussels awesome.
The beers here are in such good shape that it is like drinking them for the first time. Great selection of local, national, and international brews.
Best beer bar in Boston (Oh, wait, someone said that).Has gotten even better with the addition of the Monk's Cell. Other bars have more selections, but this list has more quality.
