The ONLY truely dynamic gallery in the Detroit area. No where else can you see the range of local, national and even international art that is totally fresh and new. If your'e interested in "WHATS HAPININ' NOW " in the art scene, then here is your place!
There is nothing else like it in Metro Detroit. It is a resource worth supporting.
Because it's NEW, it's original, it's breathtaking, it's funny, it's thoughtful, it's confusing, it's irritating, it's sad, and it makes me think in ways I don't normally process visual input.
This museum is amazing! It really & truly is one of the last bastions of contemporary art in the city. And it is so accessible and free to attend. So it's a semi-secret treasure for art lovers.
Current Art, as seen in Museum of New Art, is a recording of history in the making. History of all the aspects of a society/world. To me, it is like reading a newspaper....only it is more accurate than any newspaper telling the story. Museum of New Art is diverse, courageous and willing to look at the reality. The exhibits nurture reflection into one's soul, and one's behaviors in society.
I've been following MoNA's activities for years. I admire Jef Bourgeau's democratic spirit.
The museum and its galleries not only import national and international art, they place their key importance on showcasing Michigan artists.
Among their projects to promote local artists is DetroitNow: 12x12 - where a different Metro Detroit artist is given a solo exhibit and featured each month; and with their CHANGING CITIES they swap Detroit artists with those of other cities, such as Chicago and Toronto.
In the past years, they've also opened their galleries to local groups as broad as dance to experimental musicians formed from the DSO, to grade school exhibitions to students at Cranbrook and CCS, from young fashion designers to Chaldean artists.
