Designed by architect T. Hunter Henderson in 1936 as a masterpiece of Art Deco luxury, the Astor Hotel Miami Beach continues to reign supreme - a bastion of luxury, modern design, and simple sophistication on Washington Avenue at 10th Street. Extensive renovations in 1997 and 2002 lend an updated twist to this Art Deco beauty, without compromising its architectural integrity. The hotel has maintained not only the original exterior facade of cut coral stone, but also its characteristic design features. Henderson was a prolific architect, responsible for a total of 29 properties throughout Miami Beach, nevertheless the Astor Hotel Miami Beach unarguably continues on as his piece de resistance. The Miami Design Preservation League has listed the Hotel Astor on the National Register of Historic Places , and it is likewise prominently featured in the Art Deco Historic and Architectural South Beach tour. The Astor Hotel Miami Beach's striking lobby defines haute minimalism at its very best. It is a fine example of modern design elements perfectly at home in an Art Deco palace. Unique features such as: the original 1936 Vitrolite wall panels; and a vertical water sculpture featured in the garden area all seamlessly combine, ushering guests into an atmosphere of true style and contemporary elegance.
