Is CityVoter Free?

Of course! All aspects of CityVoter are free.

What is a Tip?

A tip, by definition, is a piece of helpful information. The terms tip and recommendation are used interchangeably.

Writing Recommendations

What makes for a great recommendation?

Great recommendations will offer timely information that helps connect people with the best local businesses. The best recommendations will relay an experience or offer insider information about what makes a place unique.

Why is there a length limit for recommendations?

A character limit encourages users to be succinct and include only the most relevant information in their recommendation. We realize that some people have more to say, but in order to provide the best experience for our users, we are focused on short and helpful recommendations.

Can I edit or delete a recommendation?

Yes. You can edit or delete any recommendation you write on the business or question page. Alternatively, you can edit or delete a recommendation under the "my stuff > tips" section.

What types of businesses or places should I write recommendations for?

Any business or place for which you have an experience to share—think restaurants, spas, bars, museums, shops, beaches—is fair game to recommend. Stick with your own experiences and do not write about second-hand information or hearsay.

What if I had a negative experience, can I write about it?

Yes. A negative recommendation can also be helpful. Whether your experience was positive or negative, stay succinct and stick to the facts. Your opinions are protected as long as all of the information is factual.

Asking Questions

What are CityVoter questions?

CityVoter questions are forums for people to exchange timely recommendations that provide the inside scoop on tough to answer questions about your city.

What types of questions should I ask?

Most questions are fair game. Because our software will surface the most interesting and popular questions, you can ask just about anything you want, as long as it is—in fact—a question. The best questions will:

  • Include a geographic scope
  • Be specific and include all relevant details
  • Have multiple possible answers that spark interesting discussion

Don't be afraid to ask something that is "too simple." Hopefully, we will surprise you with interesting recommendations!

DO look around to see if your question has been asked before. If you do ask a repeat question, that's ok; we'll point you in the right direction.

What types of questions should I NOT ask?

Avoid asking questions that:

  • Cannot be answered by a business or place
  • Include unwelcomed promotion of a specific business
  • Resemble public service announcements

Answering Questions

How can I answer a question?

Making a recommendation for a place or business is the best way to answer CityVoter questions. On any question page, just start typing a recommendation for your favorite business or place (be sure to include the name!) in the dialogue box and we'll guide you through the rest.

For example, start with the name of the place and then write your recommendation:

Who can answer CityVoter questions?

Anyone. Scores and rankings are great, but for us, the best recommendations come from real people with real opinions about businesses and places.

Can I answer a question more than once?

Yes. You can provide more than one recommendation on a question. Just make sure each tip is an independent piece of information because your tips will be ordered by how helpful they are, NOT chronologically.

Following Questions

What does it mean to "follow" a question?

Following a question means that you are opting to receive email notification for that question. When people answer a question that you are following with a recommendation, you will be notified via email.

How do I stop following a question?

To stop following a question, you can either click "don't follow" on a question page or manage your subscriptions under the "my stuff > notify" section.
