Welcome to Chapters: A Literary Bookstore. In our 20 years of selling books in downtown D.C. the most frequently asked question has been, "What's a literary bookstore? Sounds snooty or even elitist. . . ." Well, cyber-reader, if you walked in our doors you'd find our enormous poetry section right up front, literary fiction old and new, and literature in foreign languages. But you'll also find an array of offerings from Aristotle to Babar to Churchill.

Chapters offers well-considered titles, and some interesting used books and bargains. In addition, there are the program of book talks, dramatic presentations (e.g., Scena Theatre dramatizing Marcel Proust), lectures in French by the French Cultural Attaché, Roland Celette, chummy receptions, and a customer discount at the nearby E Street Theatre. I have become a fan!
