The American Coney Island is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, businesses in the downtown area (and perhaps in the entire city of Detroit) that is family-owned and operated. The restaurant has remained at the same location for 87 years. The American Coney Island was founded in 1917 by Constantine "Gust" Keros, who immigrated to Detroit from Greece in 1903. For about the last 57 years, American has been owned and operated by one of Gust's five sons, Charles "Chuck" J. Keros.

None better. Like family. Have gone there since childhood and now take my children and grandchildren. Will go out of my way to leave town so we can have lunch before heading home to Southwest Mich.

Whenever I go downtown.....I will take my freinds to this place....I have been going there since the 60's when my wife was working at Western Union....in fact, her father worked there, also...and recommended it....we just loooooooove the place...it is really nice now that they enlarged it....and serve fr\ies now...hahhahaha it has been a long time ...but I remember when it was a tiny place....Ray Mardyla

Not only does American Coney Island have the best tasting chili dogs, but the owners work with our little league program. We have done fundraising with them for the past two years and they are great to work with and support the program for hundreds of local children.

They are the 1st Coney Island in Detroit and the best. They have stood the test of time!!! I live in NYC now and wish I could get: 2 on 1 with everything, extra onions.
