A sandwich? Or a SANDWICH!

You can get a sandwich somewhere in the city just about every two blocks. But there's gotta be something that separates the good from the great. It's all about the ingredients and the ideas.

Darwin's Ltd.
One of the most underrated spots in Cambridge -- people don't know much about it because it's not actually IN one of THE squares -- but there are two (Mt Auburn & Cambridge St) outside of Harvard Square. Really fresh ingredients (love the menu with heavy avocado presence) and great bread (from Hi-Rise i've been told).

Cafe Kiraz
Great sandwiches from Cafe Kiraz. They have a lot of panini (no, not panini 's!!!) to choose from, but they also let you build whatever you want. One great hting is that they let you choose the bread (focaccia, ciabatta ... ). I particularly enjoy the grilled chicken, avocado panini. The frozen yogurt with mix-ins is another HUGE plus. This place gets my approval.

All Star Sandwich Bar
This place is amazing. To begin with a little background: they are kind of co-owned or fully owned by their neighbor 2 doors down (East Coast Grill) -- so you know the food is going to be big and bold. Most of the sandwiches served here are pressed or grilled. The fries are delicious, the cole slaw is the real deal. They serve beer, wine, and crystaal (no joke).

Tasty Gourmet
Tasty Gourmet may not be well known in Boston-proper, but as far as grilled panini go, it's up there with the best. Boars head meat, sliced FOR your sandwich. Now there's something you don't see every day. Spicy fries are a nice touch.

Parish Cafe
Great location on the corner of Boylston right near the public gardens. Great sandwiches and a surprisingly good beer selection.
-
Bob's Foods
Bob's is good for all things BIG. Don't come here expecting a fancy panini or a tuna sandwich -- they deal with gourmet Italian meats, and also make really good veal or chicken parm sandwiches. They're also just plain old massive.
-
Dave's Fresh Pasta
Really good Italian fresh pressed panini at Dave's. They have a prosciutto, mozzarella sandwich with a fig sauce that is just delicious. Daily specials etc.
-
Soleil Cafe
My favorite spot in Teele Square -- The Maryland Sandwich is my recommendation - it's a crab cake on a nice roll with watercress and Some tartery sauce. Also in the summer they have a fantastic Crimson Berry Iced Tea. Delicious.

Hot off the Press Cafe
Only went here recently. Haven't been to the one in Charlestown, but the one in Central is very good. Avocado BLT was verrrry good.
What other people are saying about this guide:
You should go to Michael's Deli in Coolidge Corner and get their breakfast sandwich. not only is it like 2.50, its HUGE. I think you'd add it to your guide...
Great list of sandwich places -- just to throw some others out there: Hi-Rise Bakery on Concord Ave in Cambridge, Carrberry's (Central Sq. and Arlington Center), and try Temptations Cafe on Huntington Ave or in St. Mary's on Beacon St.
