A cupcake tour of Boston
Created by: USqKayt
In LA, you can't drive more than a few miles without whizzing by the newest cupcake boutique. In NYC, every block from 14th to 59th seemingly has one...well the cupcake craze never took Boston by storm, but there are a few places around that should be noted for their attempt to bring the fashionable dessert to the Bean Town.
-
Lu Lu's Bake Shoppe
One of the few places in Boston where you can find the elusive Red Velvet cupcake. It's not quite as good the Red Velvet's you'll get in NYC (or down South I've been told), but, for my money this is the BEST cupcake in Boston.
-
South End Buttery
Another place where you can find those Red Velvets (am I biased?) and the cream cheese frosting is SO good. They have a fairly long list of choices including a unique chocolate-pistachio cupcake that is also really good.
-
Petsi Pies
Petsi Pies is better known for its other sweets so I stayed away from the cupcakes for a while, but after running through the rest of the menu, I gave them a whirl. The chocolate cupcake was a little rich for my tastes, but my-oh-my was the carrot cake cupcake delicious.
-
Party Favors
Three sizes (tea, regular, and jumbo) and a huge selection of flavors (the chocolate peanut butter is the best). These are great for parties, but might be a little much if you're just looking for a single cupcake to hit the spot.
-
Sweet Cupcakes
Cupcakes + Back Bay is a pretty surefire business strategy, but this place isn't getting by on location alone. They have small, somewhat expensive cupcakes, but they're really tasty. They have a few stock flavors that they will keep through the year (sweet cape and cappuccino have been my favorite so far).
I read that they have a strawberry short cake seasonal cupcake in now; I can't wait to try it! -
Vicki Lee's
I've never actually made it out to the storefront in Belmont, but I have a friend out in Waltham that always picks up a dozen for parties. The cupcake itself is deliciously light, but they skimp a little on the buttercream for my liking.

Kickass Cupcakes
This was the first true "Cupcake Boutique" to show up in Boston so I'll give them credit for taking the plunge. On my first visit, I was so excited I could barely contain myself; unfortunately, it just didn't meet my expectations. The cake was too dry and the frosting too heavy. I should probably give them another shot, but there's only so much time in life and there are only so many cupcakes to eat. Maybe one day...
What other people are saying about this guide:
Agree w/ you on Kickass: disappointing. Apparently they recently added a "dairy bar" and while i'm not sure what it means exactly, i'm intrigued and may try it again.
